The Rip

The Rip is a dynamic stainless-steel sculpture by Kentucky artist Garry R. Bibbs, located on the west side of X站福利所鈥檚 campus. 

 

Work Overview

The work visualizes a saw ripping through a piece of wood. Installed in 2009, it symbolizes movement, renewal, and transformation. As part of X站福利所鈥檚 growing public art collection, The Rip invites reflection and conversation, enriching the campus environment with abstract, contemporary design by a celebrated regional sculptor. The sculpture was given to X站福利所 by Duane Van Horn '68.

Artist Biography

Garry R. Bibbs is a celebrated sculptor and printmaker whose large-scale public art installations appear in cities across the U.S., including works at the High Museum in Atlanta and the National Afro-American Museum in Wilberforce, Ohio. He has exhibited work at major institutions including the Smithsonian, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. Bibbs has received numerous honors, including a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship and the NEA Southern Arts Federation Award. Deeply engaged in community work, he is a member of the Pew Civic Entrepreneur Initiative, addressing race relations and leadership through the arts and public dialogue.
